About Rabbi Miriam

Rabbi Miriam (Carey Knight) Berkowitz was born and raised in Montreal. She earned a BA magna cum laude in International Relations from Harvard University, 5 A-levels at King’s School, Canterbury, and an MA and Rabbinic Ordination from the Schechter Institute in Jerusalem. She was a respected and beloved Assistant Rabbi at Park Avenue Synagogue in Manhattan for three years. While an adult educator in Florida, she authoredTaking the Plunge: A Practical and Spiritual Guide to the Mikveh (Jerusalem: Schechter Institute, 2007), “Reshaping the Laws of Family Purity for the Modern World” (NY: CJLS, September, 2006), and various other articles and publications.

A founder of Kashouvot: Advancing Pastoral Care in Israel, she integrates her expertise on mikveh and transitions into work with the aging, the ill and the bereaved, their caregivers and families. She lives in Jerusalem where she does adult education, pastoral care, and lifecycle events.

Rabbi Berkowitz is a member of the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards. She learned the laws of Niddah and Mikveh with Rabbanit Shoshana Lepon of the Diaspora Yeshiva, Rabbanit Gila Rosen of Yakar, Rabbi Professor Dov Zlotnick of JTS, Dr. Moshe Benovitz of Schechter Institute, Rabbi Prof. Zvi Yehuda, Professor Emeritus of Rabbinics and Religious Studies, Laura and Alvin Siegal College of Judaic Studies, Cleveland, Rabbi Dr. Haviva Ner David of Reut: The Center for Modern Jewish Marriage, and Rav Elisha Ancselovits of Pardes/ Yeshivat Maale Gilboa.
